Unveiling My Neck

I have now finished item on my to-do list for today. I have finished the and washed my hair without falling apart at the . I should also mention that I did this without any prescription pain killers or muscle relaxants since last night. I think it's time to wean myself from them during the day.

I took the photo after removing my hard collar and before showering. It's a mirror image. My cut was made on the right. That nice ugly black mark was made by the surgeon to make sure they prepped the proper side of my neck for surgery. The wrinkles, were, unfortunately already there. The neck isn't as red as it appears, but it was swollen. The nurse says that's normal this close to surgery. This is only the tenth day. I haven't dared to attempt scrubbing the marks left by dressings and markers and all the tape they put on me in the hospital. Won't do that until I'm sure the effort won't hurt me.

It's actually quite tricky to shower and wash your hair when you aren't supposed to bend your neck too far frontwards or backwards, but especially backwards. Drying myself without bending was pretty hard, too. Hubby's been hanging around until afternoon every day since Friday, and the one day it would have helped to have him home he left before I was out of bed. He would have stayedif I'd asked, but I knew he wouldn't leave that early unless he needed to. I managed to get dry on my own and get dressed.

I'm going to rest, have lunch, and then finish my list. It's raining again, so the walk will have to wait.

Hope you do all this under your doctor's orders. Next time see that your hubby's around. Hope this surgery will give you the desired results.

The cut doesn't look too bad at all. I hope you continue to heal well.

I called the doctor before I took the shower for final instructions. I didn't do it over the weekend because I was waiting for the doctor's office to open today.

It's amazing how much better this surgery is now than it would have been 30 years ago. The incision would have been much larger and my activity during recovery much more restricted.

BarbRad wrote on December 15, 2014, 11:45 PM

I don't think so. It would just be a distraction when i have to b so careful. Drying off is another thing completely.

I think it is not wise to just wean off painkillers. Perhaps you can take half the dosage instead of not taking at all.

Glad everything is going well.

The things we take for granted. I don't think I could get properly clean or dry without bending my neck. At least there's always air-drying.

That doesn't look bad at all. In fact, it's probably the best neck surgery scar I've seen. But what counts is the good the surgery will do for you. I'm sure you're looking forward to getting back to a normal routine. Just continue to be careful.

Only time will tell. I'm sure there will be some kind of scar, but better a scar than nerve damage to my hands or legs.

I didn't keep the round the clock dosage after the first three days. Then I stopped taking Norco except before bed. Now I hardly use it at all. I still take one Soma before bed. I haven't had a problem with withdrawal because the drugs hadn't been taken long enough to become a habit.

Thanks, Meg.

BarbRad wrote on December 18, 2014, 7:51 PM

I did have to rely on that partly. I didn't have to wear the collar in the shower, but that made it harder to be careful.

BarbRad wrote on December 18, 2014, 7:52 PM

I am looking forward to that, but I'm disappointed I'm not getting much done even though I don' have to go anywhere.

OldRoadsOnceTraveled wrote on December 18, 2014, 9:58 PM

I feel like I'm not getting much done, either, and I don't have the excuse of neck surgery.

Hang in there, Barb!

BarbRad wrote on December 23, 2014, 1:32 AM

I am. Thanks.

OK. Surgery. Yes, I've had that. I had a large hole made behind my nose to enter my skull, for removal of a tumor in the middle of my head. Fun stuff. But not necessarily too bad. In my case, the surgeon was shocked. I did not bleed afterward, nor was I sick. I wanted to eat. Hey, I wasn't even in any pain.

BarbRad wrote on December 26, 2014, 11:51 PM

isn't it wonderful when it's not as bad after surgery as you were afraid it might be?

VinceSummers wrote on December 27, 2014, 8:36 AM

Yes, indeed. I told the surgeon and his assistant it was because they were excellent at what they did, but they denied it. They said it was me.
