News Really Fit to Print

“All the News Fit to print” has been the motto of the New York Times ever since its first edition went to press on September 18, 1851, today, The New York Times website has adopted the motto “All the News Fit to click.” Perhaps The New York Times still prints all the news fit to print or click, as the case may be, but very seldom is any of it happy news, news that we love to read. The same thing can be said about broadcast news, television news programs and newspapers concentrate on the type of news, which will increase their viewership and readership, and that, seems to be news about wars, crime, domestic violence, and the like, happy news doesn’t seem to attract readers, I wonder what that says about the human race. Once in a while the newspapers print something uplifting and once in a while the TV media does something worth shouting from the rooftops about like what ABC’s Good Morning America did this past week by paying off Walmart shoppers layaway accounts.

It happened at stores all across the United States, in Orlando, Florida, retired quarterback Tim Tebow appeared in the local Walmart on behalf of GMA and surprised shoppers by paying their layaway accounts for them. Damara Jarrett, a fulltime student and a single mother of 2 children was waiting in line to take items off her account because she had been in a car accident and couldn’t afford to pay for everything when Tim walked up and paid for everything, reducing Damara to tears.

Since that story broke on GMA on the 9th, people all across the nations are following their example and helping people pay off all or part of their layaway accounts. My son manages a large Toys R Us store on the East coast and he tells me that every day he has people asking to pay off the layaway accounts for those less fortunate themselves, what a beautiful way to express the true meaning of the Christmas spirit. People who would like to get involved but, for whatever reason can’t get to a store to do it in person can participate through GMA by donating to PayawaytheLayaway.org, it’s not a tax deductible donation but that just makes it more meaningful, in my opinion, if you can, I hope you will join me in making a generous donation.

Paying it forward is a great way of helping others. As you say, the media usually seems to concentrate on misfortunes. Nice to see them being helpful to people.

That is good to hear. I think many people are kind at heart, but they just do not know how to share in meaningful way.

This sounds like a great way to help others at Christmas as people struggle to buy gifts for their children. Such a choice of worthy causes to support. I wish I had enough for all of them.

I think we all share that wish!
