Why is Acid Reflux on the Rise?

Have any of you noticed how many people are now suffering with acid reflux? It makes me wonder if this always existed but it went undiagnosed. What did people do before the term 'acid reflux' was used? They probably got heartburn a lot, and used natural remedies. Thing is though, what is causing such a lot of people to even get heartburn and acid problems?

It has to be our lifestyles, probably a mix of diet and stress I would say. I was diagnosed about eight years ago but just try and manage it with diet now. I don't agree with taking acid-supressants (PPIs) because the body needs to make acid. That's natural. To stop something natural happening can't be good for the body I would have thought.

I'm guessing you're right and stress has a lot to do with it, as does diet, but it can be a sign of certain medical conditions such as heart problems and anyone who has acid reflux which doesn't go away after taking something simple like Gaviscon or Settlers should see a doctor for a checkup. You definitely shouldn't ignore long-term acid reflux. Read this:

I think it has to do with awareness and correct diagnosis. At least people come forward to avail of medical care.

Obesity is on the rise, and it can cause acid reflux. I can attest to this personally, because I had pretty bad reflux and it went away when I lost a large amount of weight. Unfortunately, I gained a lot back, and I have severe issues with it once again. As obesity continues to be a problem, related health issues will be, too--diabetes, arthritis, cancer, and plenty of other ailments.

Luckily I never have had acid reflux. My neighbor did and had to have some kind of surgery. He is ok now.
