Support our soldiers

For all of you lovely people out there, I ask you to take a moment of your time and go our troops by signing a much needed petition.

As the spouse of a retired , to some extent, I am biased. Having acknowledged that, I feel that our troops are constantly being abused by our government at every turn. Our government demands them to put their families aside in order to send them off, to places not always known, in order to fight for our freedoms and/or supposedly maintain peace throughout the world. They are expected to pretend that the atrocities they witness in the name of either never existed or were exacerbated by propaganda mongers.

Then when they come home, after supposedly completing their mission, they are brushed aside by our government. Government officials act as if a soldier's physical and mental well being is not their problem to handle once that soldier is no longer in the service. I have personally see many cases where soldiers were denied medical attention at local military hospitals because they were not active duty. Forcing them to drive over an hour away for treatment at a VA hospital. They arrive at the VA hospital and what do they encounter? The answer, EXCUSES. I am sorry, we can't assist you without your documentation showing that you left the military in good standing. I am sorry, we don't have an appointment available for 3 weeks. I am sorry, we don't have any available beds to admit you at this time.

The average citizen, those who have no idea what military life entails, are then shocked when they hear about soldiers who commit suicide. They assume, when they see retired or medically discharged soldier homeless, that he must have turned into a drunk or junkie. Worse we are outraged when that soldier, who has tried everything he can think of to get help, ends up snapping and goes on a killing spree. Why do these things happen? Because our government has abandoned their soldiers. Instead of passing budgets increases to take care of them both physically and mentally they cut back on those funds so that they can line their own pockets with pay raises or some other nonsense.

In my personal opinion, when a soldier is honorably discharged from the military he has earned the right to free medical care for the rest of his life. He/she has put their personal life on hold to the detriment of the family unit and his physical life on the line for the preservation for justice and freedom everywhere. But what does our government do? They brush those heroic souls aside like last weeks garbage. That being said, this petition isn't about getting the government to do their job financially so much as it is for fair treatment with insurance practices. Most people already know that many insurance companies will not pay for preexisting conditions. That needs to be changed. Especially for our soldiers.

I agree completely - and it's not just the USA which is ignoring veterans, it happens here in the UK too. It is almost as though our governments are embarrassed to admit that they owe both a moral and a financial debt to veterans of the forces - whether they have seen combat or not. It is disgraceful and should be addressed ASAP.

We have similar issues in Canada with the government tossing wounded soldiers around, refusing to treat, refusing benefits, etc. I worked in a veterans hospital back in the 80s and say the beginnings of the budget cuts. It's so much worse now.
