Changes in Using Photos from Photo Gallery

I noticed as I was preparing my latest post that our photos wider than 550 pixels are being cropped to that width. Since an important part of my photo was sliced off, I had to go back and delete my the photo from the gallery. Then I went back to my editor, resized the width to 551 pixels, uploaded the new photo with a slightly different name to the gallery, and replaced the old photo with the new. Evidently, a change is being made to make the site more friendly to mobile phones.*

*Afternote, 11-3-2014: After seeing changes in this between computers, and noticing today that the photo I resized in the Goldenrain tree post looks too small if I widen my browser window, I have concluded that the cropping only takes place in the user's display. So if I'm using a mobile phone with a narrow browser window, my photos will be cropped on the right to fit. If I'm using a large window, my photos will show the whole 800 pixels. That could explain why we are all seeing something different. I don't have smart phone to test with.

As to not being able to see the browse button at the top, as I mentioned in my post Changes on Persona Paper , it's the same problem. If the browser window is small, the only two buttons that show at the top are Home and Contact . If I drag the right edge of the window to make it wider, all the buttons appear again. It doesn't matter which side of the window you drag to make the window smaller, the right side of the photos will be cropped.

I'm glad I was finally able to solve the mystery. This was driving me crazy. Since others weren't seeing what I was, I thought it was the time I was working or something else.

I will try this when I write a new post. So far I have not had any problem but I do not post through my cell phone.

Crin wrote on November 3, 2014, 2:01 AM

It's always something new!

Kasman wrote on November 3, 2014, 4:19 AM

None of my older posts are affected by this. I guess it only applies to new posts.

bestwriter wrote on November 3, 2014, 4:22 AM

I created a post with images and did not have issues.

Ruby3881 wrote on November 3, 2014, 4:49 AM

Is is just the photos added from the gallery, Barb? Or does this cropping happen with the cover photos too?

maxeen wrote on November 3, 2014, 5:10 AM

Is it okay to change to another photo,to edit it?

MegL wrote on November 3, 2014, 5:49 AM

Thanks for the warning, I will have to look back at my old posts because I use a LOT of photographs.

Feisty56 wrote on November 3, 2014, 9:40 AM

I hope that if this is going to be the way for photos here going forward that the new specifications are officially announced and placed somewhere that everyone can access. Thanks for the heads-up on this -- you are very observant!

Thanks for the heads up...I will have to check this out..

AngelSharum wrote on November 3, 2014, 11:57 AM

The post I did last night worked fine. I will be doing another one here soon so I will keep this in mind.

SandraLPetersen wrote on November 3, 2014, 12:16 PM

Thanks for the warning. I, too, am a photographer/writer and I use a photo editing service quite often to crop and otherwise enhance my images. I will have to pay careful attention to the width of my snapshots I use.

I don't post through my cell phone, either.

BarbRad wrote on November 3, 2014, 1:03 PM

Something new is always happening. I think some experimenting was going on last night. I see my browse button and rules are back today, too.

BarbRad wrote on November 3, 2014, 1:04 PM

Nope. Maybe you just used photos the right size. One of the photos I used in a post a couple of days ago is cropped - my birdbath photo has an edge cut off.

BarbRad wrote on November 3, 2014, 1:07 PM

With cover photos it's not as important, since you can still open them full size in another tab. But I haven't checked all mine. I think they just resize the intro photos rather than cropping them. The gallery photos get the right side cropped off if the image is too big. Sort of like that other site mangled our intro photos. But at least we can edit and change them on posts where it matters.

Kasman wrote on November 3, 2014, 1:14 PM

This is a puzzle. My photos were all 800px and larger and they are still intact. AngelSharum 's latest post included wide photos and that post is OK.

BarbRad wrote on November 3, 2014, 1:22 PM

Yes. Where the size makes a difference, you can go back and delete the old from gallery and post and add the new to replace it.

BarbRad wrote on November 3, 2014, 1:23 PM

Just look at the right side to see if an important part of the photo was cropped.

BarbRad wrote on November 3, 2014, 1:30 PM

There is still no change in the FAQ, where it says the dimensions aren't restricted, but it doesn't say they will use the image with the dimensions you upload.

BarbRad wrote on November 3, 2014, 1:32 PM

You probably won't notice unless the extreme right side of your image has been cropped and that was an important part of your image. If your images weren't as large as the ones I have been uploading, they may not have been cropped.

BarbRad wrote on November 3, 2014, 1:33 PM

There shouldn't be a problem if your images are only 550 wide.

BarbRad wrote on November 3, 2014, 1:33 PM

Forewarned is forearmed.

AngelSharum wrote on November 3, 2014, 2:33 PM

I haven't had any problems yet today.

AngelSharum wrote on November 3, 2014, 2:34 PM

I don't know what size my original photos are. I'd have to look. I do use the 50% size down thing for most of mine though.

BarbRad wrote on November 3, 2014, 7:01 PM

When I looked today, the photo that I replaced the cropped on with last night now has a wide margin, whereas last night it had almost no margin. I am really confused now as to what is happening. I'm going to look at my birdbath post again. Today it is intact. Color me confused. There must have been some experimentation going on and I just posted the wrong thing at the wrong time. Could you shed some light on this elitecodex ? Will the 800 pixels wide photos still be safe from being cropped?

bestwriter Crin Kasman AngelSharum Ruby3881 maxeen MegL Feisty56 Ellis SandraLPetersen Please see the update to my post on changes in using photos from gallery. I solved the mystery., and it's not the problem I thought it was. There's an easy fix.

MegL wrote on November 4, 2014, 1:51 AM

Ah! I had a problem like that when I first got this computer (Windows 7). It has a large screen but I am short-sighted, so when the computer offered to make the display larger, I accepted because a lot of the screen was unused. BUT (big but), when Windows makes the display larger, it does so by cropping the edges of the displayed material (not by using more of the screen). That meant I could see the middle bit better BUT, any "buttons" near the edge of the screen were lost to sight. I now keep my monitor on the 100% view and no longer have problems with not seeing things that others can see and wondering why. Of course, mobile phones probably have to do that automatically, their screens are so small. I don't have a smartphone either.

This is Guiness the Cat. Do I need to be protecting my ears? Or only when I'm laying down with my ears on the right? I'm really tired of having my ears chopped off.

BarbRad wrote on November 4, 2014, 2:35 AM

Just keep the browser display big enough to let you stretch out.

Feisty56 wrote on November 4, 2014, 7:41 AM

Gotcha -- thanks, my lady Sherlock Holmes. : )

Kasman wrote on November 4, 2014, 3:24 PM

BarbRad - that makes more sense! I should have realised this was what was happening since I have observed that photos on Bubble Ooze appear different on different devices - on a full-size pc they are the proper letterbox shape whereas on my daughter's iPad they appear square.

OldRoadsOnceTraveled wrote on November 4, 2014, 11:26 PM

Kasman - This is Guiness the Cat. It DOES make more sense that I should stretch out. Oh, wait. Were you talking to BarbRad ?

Ruby3881 wrote on November 5, 2014, 5:00 AM

Glad to hear it wasn't a major issue! I had wondered, as all my graphics looked fine :)
