How to Build A Garden Pond
It's Easy to Create your Own Pond
Mostly this will be in pictures, because they will show better than words just what you have to do to create your own pond.
First, you have to dig out the area for the pond. If you are not using a commercial pre-formed liner, then you can create your own preferred shape because you can then use plastic lining to mould to the shape you have chosen. This is obviously the most labour intensive part. You need 3 levels, a shallow edge, a medium depth shelf and a small, deeper centre. These different levels suit different types of plant and also animals, such as fish. The deeper centre part gives a place to plant water lilies and also a hiding area for fish.
Once you have dug the pond to the size and shape you want and made sure the ground is smooth (no sharp stones), cover the area with plastic pond liner and start to add water. The weight of water will push the liner into all the various nooks and crannies. It's best to add the deep water plants, such as water lilies now, so you don't have to wade in later.
Keep filling the pond and plant your chosen plants as you go along.
Once the pond is complete, add rocks or old bricks around the edge, to hold the plastic down and form a neat edge to your new pond.
Let your pond mature. You will need to wait a few days after filling before adding the fish.
