The first time in my life that I got lost in my own city.

I love to walk and explore new places, spaces and areas. I remember this day so well and I wanted to take a taxi back home, but I got lost in my own city. Port-Elizabeth is big and then I got confused with the different areas. I thought I was going in the right direction, and because I am used to walking I didn't mind the distance.

About an hour after I have walked into the wrong direction I have realized that I am lost, and not even my phone with a map could help me. By the time that I hit 1pm I decided to turn around, and then I got lost once again. At this stage I was irritated and hot, and didn't want to call anybody because it sounded stupid to tell someone you are lost.

In the end I did find my way back, but only after about 6 hours of walking. Then I needed to take a taxi back home; unfortunately I still had to walk another 45 minutes before I really hit home. That was the day that I said to myself that I will never walk when I am not sure where I was going to. It might sound silly, but if I had to get lost in a forest or desert I will not find my way back. I admire those people who can remember any direction but I can't.

Even though I have been living in Port-Elizabeth for about 10 years now I still don't know it; I used to give out pamphlets and after that I have an idea of where I am.

sorry to learn that you've lost in the city. i think you must feel unsecured by that time because i'm the one who always lost in the area even it is my familiar place and feel unsecured .

I do a bit, but that is not too bad. If I do get lost I use the sun as my compass. It is actually better to know what is going on around us.

I am not very good with directions either. If there are too many alleys or I go to crowded marketplace with lots of stalls, I get lost too so i try to avoid such situations esp if alone.

Some people have an innate sense of direction and others are clueless. I fall somewhere in the middle, but do use as many references and reminders as I can get.

That must have been tough; at such a small age.

I think that is the big reason why I tend to shop closer, because getting lost is no joke
