George Martin Discusses "A Day in the Life"

I've always been a massive Beatles fan. Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is my favourite album and A Day in the Life my favourite track. I just found this video of George Martin discussing that track . It's fascinating to see the thought processes involved. Lennon and McCartney always leading and George Martin providing the technique to realize the vision. Despite all the revolutionary (at the time) ideas, it's reassuring to hear just John Lennon sing his composition - just his genius, his voice and the simple beat. The song stands on its own. Would it be just as good without the engineering? Perhaps not, but the essence of the track is pure John Lennon.

When I was a teenager, I had almost all of their albums. I listened to them a lot.

I was walking in a mall yesterday morning and a Beatles song came on over the PA, rather than muzak. There were not many people in the Mall and most of them were older (like me), it was amusing to see how many people stopped walking and started singing (including me)!

I liked some of the Beatles music, but like John Lenon's music better.

I think Paul is a genius but John was a genius with greater depth. It's amazing that two lads from such ordinary backgrounds should be born in the same area, find each other and have extraordinary talents that complemented each other so perfectly.

Yes but I guess the seventies were pretty amazing for music as well.
