Just one clown?

Went to the circus today. I haven't been to a circus in fifty years. Yes, it was a disappointment. It was inside, no big tent and the smell of hay and wild animals. Maybe that was a good thing considering the outside temps and humidity.

There was a lot of dancing. I mean a lot of dancing. An acrobat would perform a semi daring move and then spend minutes dancing with his fellow acrobats. Then another move followed by more dancing.

And the ring leader sang. It was more of a Broadway show than a circus. There were elephants but no lions, tightrope walkers but no aerialist, 10 dollar cotton candy and 12 dollar sno-cones.

And one clown, who didn't look like a clown, who secretly wanted to be a super hero.

My parents took me to a circus when I was about three. I remember nothing about it except a bad experience of being forced to relinquish our seats for a special group, though the seats had shown no indication that they were reserved. I have never gone back to the circus.
